Who is BRAHMAN in Sanatana Dharma?

Brahman indicates a formless ENERGY and pervading the entire Universe. There are no physical Gods, as per Rig Veda, which is the source of various spiritual aspects. Everything emanates from that formless ENERGY or Brahman.

Rig Veda 6.16.35

गर्भे मातुः पितुष्पिता विदिद्युतानो अक्षरे सीदन्नृतस्य योनिमा
garbhe mātuḥ pituṣ pitā vididyutāno akṣare | sīdann ṛtasya yonim ā ||

English translation:

Sitting on the birthplace of TRUTH (ṛtam), in the womb of all creations, as the father of fathers (or the Guru of the Gurus), (AGNI) having illumined forth at the imperishable (akṣara) PLACE.

—-

As long as an individual is perceiving only the outward appearance of the world, ie., other living and non-living beings, various emotions of Love, Jealousy, passion, anger, etc, it presents a divided version of the formless ENERGY.

In Rig Veda it is called Diti - the finite, the material, and the divided consciousness.

When an individual turns one’s gaze inwards, withdrawing slowly but steadily one’s attention from various materialistic aspects, ie., opposite sex, children, wealth, fame, emotions, etc, one’s mind get focused. It is called strengthening of the Mind or Indra, in Rig Veda.

When an individual’s focus has been turned completely inwards, the infinite consciousness from which everything manifested will appear in the inner spiritual realm.

It indicates merging with the BRAHMAN.

This infinite consciousness is called Aditi, in Rig Veda.

Rig Veda 8.48.2

अन्तश्च प्रागा अदितिर्भवास्यवयाता हरसो दैव्यस्य इन्दविन्द्रस्य सख्यं जुषाणः श्रौष्टीव धुरमनु राय ऋध्याः
antaś ca prāgā aditir bhavāsy avayātā haraso daivyasya | indav indrasya sakhyaṃ juṣāṇaḥ śrauṣṭīva dhuram anu rāya ṛdhyāḥ ||

English translation:

When you have gone within, you will become Aditi, appeaser of divine wrath. (Soma) Drop, enjoying the comradeship of Indra, like an obedient mare following the chariot-pole, you should follow Wisdom (riches to fulfillment).

Upanishads say the same issue in a different fashion - He who knows that highest Brahman becomes even Brahman;.

Mundaka Upanishad 3.2.9

sa yo ha vai tat paramaṃ brahma veda brahmaiva bhavati nāsyābrahmavitkule bhavati |
tarati śokaṃ tarati pāpmānaṃ guhāgranthibhyo vimukto'mṛto bhavati || 9 ||

He who knows that highest Brahman becomes even Brahman; and in his line, none who knows not the Brahman will be born. He crosses grief and virtue and vice and being freed from the knot of the heart, becomes immortal.
