Why is Rudra called a DIVINE Varāha?

Weather Clipart-hand sketched rain cloud with heavy rainfall

Rig Veda mentions the ONE formless ENERGY or BRAHMAN with various epithets, ie., INDRA, AGNI, RUDRA, ADITI, SARASWATI, etc.

Rudra indicates the fierce form of the BRAHMAN, aides the spiritual practitioner.

The basic premise of spirituality is as follows:

The basic premise of spirituality is as follows:

  • Every individual will have a DIVINE light/BRAHMAN hidden within oneself, though the individual may not be aware of it.
  • The emotional attachments/feelings, viz., love, jealousy, anger, avarice, etc, are hindrances in an individual, which will conceal the DIVINE LIGHT and will not allow one to experience the DIVINE LIGHT, ie., one is in the state of separation from the pure consciousness

Rudra aides the spiritual practitioner by rooting out the vices, viz., EGO, love, jealousy, anger, avarice, following the path of UNTRUTH, etc, in an individual practicing spirituality.

This rooting out of deep-rooted vices can only be done by a powerful DIVINE force, which the Rig Veda mentions as Rudra or DIVINE varāha.

Rig Veda 1.114.5

दिवो वराहमरुषं कपर्दिनं त्वेषं रूपं नमसा नि ह्वयामहे हस्ते बिभ्रद्भेषजा वार्याणि शर्म वर्म च्छर्दिरस्मभ्यं यंसत्
divo varāham aruṣaṃ kapardinaṃ tveṣaṃ rūpaṃ namasā ni hvayāmahe | haste bibhrad bheṣajā vāryāṇi śarma varma cchardir asmabhyaṃ yaṃsat ||

English translation:

We call down with reverence the cloud/boar of heaven, flame-red, with braided hair, turbulent in form. Bearing in his hand desirable healing remedies, he will extend shelter, covering, and protection to us.

MIND of the individual, engulfed in vices, is like a parched EARTH.

Rudra provides medicines to the devotee.

varāha means a boar as well as a cloud. Rudra, the varāha, plows the MIND of the individual violently(aruṣaṃ), engulfed in vices (Earth), and prepares the MIND (ground) for sowing positive seeds (provides medicines)

  • like following the path of TRUTH,
  • non-possessiveness
  • developing the divine intuition

While the Mind is ploughed properly, Rudra, the varāha or the divine Cloud, releases water on the MIND (ground), so that positive seeds will get sprouted and spiritual progress can be achieved.
